One is not the Loneliest Number, Embracing Solitude in Workplaces

Why does solitude make people uncomfortable?

Why is being alone seen as being incomplete?

Why does society celebrate pairs but question individuals?

When Solitude Becomes a Silent Rebellion
In many workplaces and social circles, individuality often becomes a silent rebellion. A person who chooses solitude over small talk, peace over gossip, and self-growth over social validation is frequently misunderstood. The one who walks alone, eats alone, listens to music alone or simply minds their own business becomes a subject of curiosity, pity or even ridicule.

The Misinterpretation of Independence
The irony lies in how society perceives independence. A person who doesn’t seek attention, who doesn’t indulge in unnecessary chatter or who doesn’t conform to the "group culture" is often labelled as arrogant, strange or socially awkward. Their calmness is mistaken for pride, their silence for weakness, and their self-sufficiency for loneliness.

The Quiet Judgments in Everyday Spaces
In many offices, such individuals are quietly judged for their clothes, their gym routines, their food choices, even their facial expressions. People project their insecurities onto them, mocking what they secretly admire. They imitate their habits, discipline, and composure but never acknowledge the inspiration. Instead, they twist the narrative, making them appear odd while borrowing their strength in silence.

The Double Standard of Togetherness
Interestingly, when two people walk together, share a meal or simply exist side by side, society’s judgment suddenly disappears. The same actions that seemed "weird" when done alone become normal, acceptable even admirable when done in pairs. It’s as if the presence of another person validates one’s existence. The one who is alone becomes the easy target, the one to be questioned, whispered about or pitied. Society rarely mocks the duo, it reserves its sharpest eyes for the solitary.

The Myth of Needing Company
Is friendship or companionship a mandatory badge of normalcy?
Having good company can indeed make work lighter and life warmer but no one has the right to label or judge another person without understanding their struggles, experiences, or choices that shaped who they are today. Some people walk alone not because they dislike others but because they have learned to find peace within themselves.

The Fear of Authenticity
This behaviour reflects a deeper societal discomfort with authenticity. When someone chooses to live in their own way instead of following what everyone else does, it makes people who depend on others’ approval feel uncomfortable. This truth applies to both men and women, anyone who dares to be different often faces the same silent resistance. The calm, composed individual becomes a mirror, exposing others chaos, envy and fear of being left behind.

The Attempt to Break the Unbreakable
Often, people try to break such individuals under the guise of "teaching them a lesson". They mistake quiet confidence for arrogance and independence for attitude. In reality, these individuals are usually the most well-behaved, polite, and respectful ones , those who choose kindness over confrontation and dignity over drama. Yet, their calm nature becomes a challenge for others who cannot understand strength without noise. The effort to “fix” them is nothing more than an attempt to control what cannot be controlled , a spirit that refuses to bend to unnecessary validation.

The Real Power of Two
But the truth is simple, solitude is not sadness and silence is not weakness. The power of two, the balance between self and society , lies in respecting both individuality and community. A person can be complete alone and still be kind to others.

The Courage to Stand Alone

The real strength is not in blending in but in standing firm without bitterness. The one who walks alone is not lost, he or she is simply walking their own path , one that doesn’t need approval, only purpose.
